Latest treatment for cancer is Immunotherapy, also called biologic therapy, is a type of cancer treatment that boosts the body’s natural defences to fight cancer. It uses substances made by the body or in a laboratory to improve or restore immune system function. And another is The Proton therapy, also called proton beam therapy, is a type of radiation therapy. It uses protons rather than x-rays to treat cancer. A proton is a positively charged particle. At high energy, protons can destroy cancer cells. Doctors may use proton therapy alone. They may also combine it with x-ray radiation therapy, surgery, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy.

No, in most cases, hair will grow back over a period of time.

It depends on the type of cancer and at what stage it was treated .Cancer recurs because small areas of cancer cells can remain in the body after treatment. Over time, these cells may multiply and grow large enough to cause symptoms or for tests to find them. When and where a cancer recurs depends on the type of cancer. Some cancers have an expected pattern of recurrence.

PLAN YOUR CHEMOTHERAPHY

Dr. Suresh Advani plans a course of chemotherapy treatment for each individual person.

Find out more about how Dr. Advani makes the chemotherapy plan and why the plan might change from time to time.

Chemotherapy is not usually a single treatment. You have a course of treatment which includes a number of chemotherapy cycles.

A course of chemotherapy usually takes between 6 – 8 months, although it can be more or less than that.
The treatment will include one or more chemotherapy drugs. You may take the chemotherapy into a vein (intravenous drugs), PICC, Port or as tablets or capsules.

During a course of treatment, you usually have between 6 to 8 cycles of treatment. A cycle is the time between one round of treatment until the start of the next.

After each round of treatment you have a break, to allow the medicines to act and your body to recover. So if your cycle lasts 4 weeks, you may have treatment on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd days and then nothing from the 4th to the 28th day. Then the cycle starts again.

Or, as another example, you may have a 3 week cycle where you have treatment on the 1st and 8th days, but nothing on days 2 to 7 and days 9 to 21.

Treatment plans are based on years of research. Your doctor will suggest the best combination of drugs based on his years of experience and research. The doctors aim on giving drugs that kill the cancer cells while causing as little harm as possible to normal, healthy cells.
You have chemotherapy as a course of treatments over a few months because:
• it allows the chemotherapy to kill more cancer cells
• the rest between treatments allows your body to recover from any side effects

Depending on the drug or combination of drugs, each treatment can last a few hours or a few days. You may have treatments every week or every 2, 3 or 4 weeks.
How often you have treatment also depends on which drugs you are having, as well as your treatment plan.

When you have chemo through an infusion pump, you may have the drugs:

• all the time for a few months (continuous administration)
• for a few days each month
• for a few weeks

The exact treatment plan (regimen) that your doctor chooses depends on a number of things including:

• where it originated
• the type of cancer you have
• where it is in your body
• if it has spread and where to

Your doctor will also take your general health and fitness and your age into account. Some drugs have more of an effect on your body than others. Your doctor has to judge that you’re well enough to be able to cope with any side effects of the treatment before you start.

How often you have each cycle, and how long your treatment course lasts, also depends on many factors. These include:

• the type of cancer you have
• the drugs used
• how the cancer cells respond to the drugs
• any side effects from the drugs

WHAT TO EXPECT

Type of chemo regimen for you based on your cancer type and stage as well as your health. The goals of chemotherapy may vary based on these factors. You may be on chemo for:

  • Cure: If possible, the goal of chemotherapy is to cure your cancer or make the tumor or cancer disappear and not come back.
  • Control: For some patients, the goal of chemotherapy is to shrink the tumors and stop the cancer from growing or spreading.
  • Palliation: When the cancer is in the advanced stage, chemo may be given to help relieve your symptoms and enable you to participate in your daily activities when possible.

Your doctor will choose chemotherapy drugs and a treatment schedule that’s unique to you. Also, your care team will regularly test your blood to make sure your body is making enough blood cells. It is important to start strong. Talk to your doctor about how to help manage your treatment. Depending on your treatment goals, you may want to discuss:

  • Avoiding interruptions
  • Staying on schedule
  • Staying with it until your chemo plan is complete, if possible

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER TREATMENT

Now that your treatment has ended you can focus on your recovery. Cancer can be life changing so getting back to normal may take some time. To begin with it’s not uncommon to have days when you feel less positive or are still coping with treatment side effects. So try not to expect too much straight away.

You may find you gradually get back to the routine you had before cancer treatment. Some people may have on-going physical effects following cancer treatment. In this case, you may find it takes some time to adjust to a new routine.

You may decide to make some positive lifestyle changes after finishing treatment. This may include eating healthily, being more physically active, stopping smoking, if you smoke, or taking up a complementary therapy to reduce stress.

To begin with, you’ll usually have regular follow-up appointments to check your progress and to discuss any concerns you may have. If you have any problems in between appointments always get in touch. Advice and support will be available to you even after treatment ends.
